Charleston’s chance is slipping away to make sure downtown’s Union Pier truly serves the local community. Union Pier is the opportunity of a lifetime to build a neighborhood from scratch in one of America’s great cities. It is where we can apply everything we’ve learned about our role in this waterfront ecosystem and all that we know about our complicated history.

It’s a chance to listen to our neighbors to create a place that all Charlestonians can be proud of. As a city, we cannot ignore our responsibility to ensure this project is designed by and for our citizens. There is a better way to redevelop Union Pier than what is being proposed.

While some might say this plan is cooked, we believe the city has the leverage — and an obligation — to improve it.
